Never buy food containing by-product meal or meat and bone
meal. These are the most inexpensive source of animal protein
and not a reliable source of nutrition for your cat.
Avoid
foods that rely on by-products. By-products consist of organs
and parts condemned for human consumption.
Look for named meal or meal (lamb or chicken meal, instead
of the generic term meat) as the first ingredient.
Avoid generic store brands. They contain cheap and poorer
quality ingredients.
Check the expiration date to ensure freshness.
Select
brands advertised as natural. They are better than most. Some
brands are now preserved with vitamin C or E instead of chemical
preservatives (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin and propyl glycol).
Never use prescription diet food for your cat unless it's
prescribed by your veterinarian for a specific medical problem.
If your cat is on a prescription diet, check with your veterinarian
at least every six months to see if the diet is still correct.
