When
a cat is being introduced into a home where there is already
a resident cat (or cats) the cats must be given adequate time
to get acquainted and work things out among themselves.
If
possible keep the new cat confined to a single room for a
few days before leaving the door open. This gives the resident
cats time to adjust to the smell of the newcomer and vice
versa. You can let them out when you are home to supervise
but be sure to separate them when you go out.
A
little hissing or growling or even fighting may occur but
squabbles are usually resolved within time. Allow the cats'
time to work it out for themselves. Do not intervene or take
sides. Giving preferential protection or affection to some
individuals, or breaking up fights before they are resolved,
usually makes matters worse and prolongs the adaptation period.
Respect the existing territories, routines and privileges
of your old cat. Make a special effort to show them extra
affection and assure them that you still love them.
